Elizabeth Bottorf Yu - President

Elizabeth Bottorf


Technical Director

Elizabeth has over 15 years of playing experience and 15 years of coaching experience. Elizabeth has coached girls ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. She started her coaching career at George Mason University where she served as a Volleyball Camp Court Coach, worked as a head coach for the Springfield Youth Association, and assisted in George Mason Volleyball clinics under head coach, Pat Kendrick. She continued her coaching career at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. Elizabeth was the assistant coach under head coach Elizabeth Zicha, the fifth all-time winningest active coach in Division III and 24th across all divisions.

Elizabeth went on to coach varsity high school volleyball at Westfield High School and club volleyball at SYA VBC in Chantilly, Virginia.

Elizabeth attended NCAA Division I, George Mason University, on a full athletic volleyball scholarship from 2002-06. She was a member of the 2002 and 2003 Colonial Athletic Association championship teams. Due to career-ending injuries, Elizabeth took a medical hardship in 2004. She graduated from George Mason in May 2007 with a B.S. in Education

Elizabeth was four-year letter winner and two-year volleyball captain for Indian Creek High School in Wintersville, Ohio. During her tenure at Indian Creek, she was a three-time first team all-conference honoree, a two-time First Team Ohio District 5 selection, a Second team All Ohio selection, and was named player of the year in 2002 by the Herald Star/Weirton daily times. She finished her high school volleyball career with a 93-11 record, four Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Championships, 4 sectional titles, 2 district titles, 3 regional appearances and one State Runner-up title. She also set the 2002 state record for the most jump serve aces (12) in a match (best out of 3 games to 15).

Elizabeth also competed on the sand in 1999 and 2000. In 1999 Bottorf paired up with partner Brandie Beebe, a high school and club teammate, to compete in the Speedo AVP Beach National Championships. In 1999, she and Beebe placed second at the Speedo AVP Beach National Championships in Hermosa Beach, CA. The following year she paired up with a new partner, Brie Hagerty, to compete in the AAU Jr. Beach National Championships. In 2000, she and Hagerty won the AAU Jr. Beach National Championships.

Elizabeth started playing club volleyball at age 8. She played for Club Gold out of Wintersville, Ohio, Pittsburgh Elite and Penn Juniors out of Pittsburgh, PA, and Mid Ohio out of Columbus, Ohio. She finished her club career with 3 national appearances, 1 East Coast Championship title, 2 Northeast Qualifier titles and many local and regional titles.

Maria Velicu

Head Coach - 18 Elite

Maria joined the VA Juniors program during the 2021-2022 season, bringing in nearly a decade of playing experience.  Born in Macin, Romania, Maria was a member of the National Honor Society at Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, and attended the United States Military Academy in West Point. Maria will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Head Coach of our 18s Elite team.

Sammy Carroll

Assistant Coach - 18 Elite
Setters Coach 13's - 18's

Sammy joined VA Juniors for her first season as a coach in 2023.  Sammy is one of the most decorated setters to compete at Christopher Newport University.  She aspires to be a Nutritionist and Personal Trainer.  Sammy will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 18s Elite team and will run all of the setting training for U13's-U18's.

  • Finished her 2022 season ranked third nationally in assists with 1,266
  • In 2022, Sammy added the team’s fourth-most aces with 42, the fourth-most digs with 305, the fourth-most blocks with 53, contributed double digit assists in 36 match, posted the best single season kill, assist, dig, and block totals of her career, and eclipsed 40 assists in 13 matches
  • Named All-Conference first team, C2C tournament MVP, and garnered AVCA All-Region and All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2021
  • In 2021, Sammy totaled 1258 assists in, the sixth-best single-season mark in program history
  • Earned a starting setter position her freshman season in 2019, leading the Coast to Coast conference with 1230 assists

Paige Hanssen

Head Coach - 17 Elite

Paige started coaching with VA Juniors at the start of 2021-22 season.  Paige served two years as an assistant coach at Colby College and will be the Head Coach for our 17s Elite team in the 2023-2024 season.

Mujay Mambu

Assistant Coach - 17 Elite

Mujay began coaching at VA Juniors during the 2021-2022 season while attending and playing for George Mason University.  She brings over eight years of playing experience at GMU, Fairleigh Dickinson, and at Chantilly High School.  Mujay will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 17s Elite team.

Michelle Bredehoft

Head Coach - 16 Elite
Age Group Coordinator 13's-18's

Michelle started coaching with VA Juniors during the 2019 season.  Having begun coaching right out of high school, brings in over 14 years of coaching experience.  During her first season with VA Juniors, Michelle helped coach her 18s Elite team to many successful tournament finishes including winning a bid to USAV Nationals.  Michelle will be with the VA Juniors family going forward as Head Coach of the 16s Elite team and 13s-18s Age Group Coordinator.

  • Head Freshman coach at Langley High School for six seasons
  • Assistant Varsity coach at Langley 2009-2020, during which Langley won numerous District and Regional Championships, and 2 State Championships

Eliott Sledds

Assistant Coach - 16 Elite

Eliott started coaching with VA Juniors in 2022 with over a decade of playing experience, and nearly eight years of coaching experience at the club and collegiate level.  He graduated from Christopher Newport University (CNU) in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Finance. Eliott will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 16s Elite team.

  • Served for two years as an assistant coach at Marymount University
  • Coached the men’s club volleyball team at CNU for four years
  • Led his CNU men’s club team to multiple top 5 finishes in EXVA DII as the only Division III team in the league

Jharred Tulloch

Assistant Coach - 15 Elite
Recruiting Coordinator

Jharred began coaching for VA Juniors in 2018. After spending 3 seasons as an Assistant Coach and Technical Coordinator for the George Mason Men’s Volleyball team, Jharred will be with the VA Juniors family going forward as the club’s Recruitment Director and Assistant Coach of our 15s Elite team.

In his first season with Juniors at the U17s age group, Coach Jharred led his team to a Second Place finish in the CHRVA Regional Tournament, Gold Bracket Finish at Capitol Hill Classic, a Third Place finish at the Northeast Qualifier Tournament, and a number of other top-10 finishes throughout the season. Coach Jharred’s 17s team ultimately earned three separate bids (American, USA, and National) to USAV Nationals in Indianapolis. Some highlights of the season included defeating 2-time National Champions A5-Mizuno Scott at NEQ’s as well as finishing the season with 9 collegiate committed athletes.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

  • At George Mason: coordinated all film associated with team play, charged with statistical analysis of both matches and practices, worked with liberos and focused on the defensive skills and schemes for the team
  • Worked with 8 All Conference Athletes as well as 2 All Americans with George Mason

Katie started coaching with VA Juniors in 2015, bringing in over 15 years of playing experience.  Katie is a graduate from Virginia Tech with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, and recently graduated from Shenandoah University with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Katie will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 15s Elite team.

Sasha Sampson

Co-Head Coach - 14 Elite

Coach Sasha has been playing volleyball since she was 12 years old and has been in love with the game ever since.  She loves interacting with young athletes and teaching them the skills that have made her successful during her volleyball career. Coach Sasha is a disciplined player and coach who recognizes the importance of building values and has a strong technical knowledge of the game.  Sasha will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Head Coach of our 14s Elite team.

Raven Jordan

Co-Head Coach - 14 Elite

Raven started coaching with VA Juniors at the start of the 2022-2023 season.  In her first year coaching with VA Juniors, she led her team to a USAV GJNC appearance.

Jason Perkins

Assistant Coach - 14 Elite

Jason began coaching at VA Juniors during the 2022-2023 season, bringing over seven years of playing experience at the club, high school, and collegiate levels.  Jason will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 14s Elite team.

Dejon Griffin

Head Coach - 13 Elite

Dejon joined the VA Juniors program during the 2021-2022 season, bringing in over 12 years of coaching and playing experience in USAV (CHRVA, Lonestar, and Bayou Region) AAU, High, and Middle school, and is a former Division 1 collegiate athlete.  Dejon will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Co-Head Coach of our 13s Elite team.

  • As four-year head coach at the brand new program, Dejon coached the team to four winning seasons and helped two players receive collegiate scholarships (Garden City CC and Rust College)

Jazzy Clark

Assistant Coach - 13 Elite

Jazmin recently joined the VA Juniors program, with a decade of experience playing and coaching volleyball. Born in Ashburn, Virginia, Jazmin currently attends Georgetown University as an undergraduate sophomore studying computer science.  Jason will be with the VA Juniors family in the 2023-24 season as the Assistant Coach of our 14s Elite team.

Jewel Clark

Floater Coach

Jewel began coaching with VA Juniors in 2021.  She is a VA Juniors alum and brings over eight years of playing experience, including having competed in a USAV National Championship match.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

  • Assisted in coaching camps and clinics with VA Juniors open to players ranging from 12-18 since 2021
  • Coached for VA Juniors as a floater and assistant coach in multiple age groups, providing specialized training to our hitters
  • Assistant Coached VA Juniors’ U15 Elite team to multiple successful tournament finishes.

PLAYING EXPERIENCE

College

  • Appeared in 29 sets across eight matches before suffering a season-ending injury in her 2020-21 season, averaging 1.90 kills and 0.52 blocks per set
  • Posted a season-high 11 kills at a .280 clip vs. GW (Feb. 7, 2021)
  • Appeared in 51 sets across 19 matches in 2019, totaling 49 blocks – the third most on the team

High School

  • Four-year varsity letter winner at Briar Woods High School
  • Named captain and MVP her senior season
  • Selected to 5A First Team All-District and First Team All-Region in 2018

Club

  • Played club for VA Juniors under coach Elizabeth Bottorf
  • Competed in Girls’ Junior National Championships from 2014-2019
  • Led VA Juniors to first place finish in Capitol Hill Classic in 2017
  • Won The Northeast Qualifier 4 years in a row from 2015-2018
  • Took VA Juniors to the Girls’ Junior National Championship game in 2017
  • Was part of the VA Juniors 16’s team that set a club record for consecutive sets won and matches won. The team won 29 matches in a row (58 straight sets).

Paul Yu

Paul is a successful business executive in the information technology space and brings this experience with him to VA Juniors to further develop the foundation of the organization. He is Safe Sport and IMPACT certified.  He is one of the premier volleyball clinicians in the metro area and many of his players have gone on to play college volleyball.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

  • Began his coaching career in 1990 with Fairfax Juniors
  • During the VA Juniors' inaugural season, Paul was the head U16’s coach and U18’s assistant coach. VA Juniors U16 RAMPAGE finished 2nd out of 110 teams at the Capital Hill Classic and had 2 players named to the All Tournament team.
  • Coached the 2014-15 U17 Elite team to a win at the Northeast Qualifier in Philadelphia
  • Won several CHRVA Regional tournaments in the U17 age group
  • Northeast Qualifier 2015 U17 American Division Champion
  • South Atlantic Championship 2015 U17 Finalist
  • CHRVA Regional Bronze - U18‘s Open Division
  • CHRVA Regional Gold - U15‘s Sliver Division
  • USAV National Bid - U18’s American Division
  • USAV Capital Classic - U16’s 2nd place Gold Division
  • USAV Monument City - U15’s 5th place Gold Division

PLAYING EXPERIENCE

  • Founded the George Washington University Club Volleyball team in 1979 and played for the Club until 1985
  • Played USAV with the Washington VBC after graduating from GW.
